Question: Should I strive for more or just be happy with what I’ve got?

I’m a professional graphic designer. I’ve been working in the field for about three years, and I have a bachelor’s degree in graphic design. Currently I am working part time from home (to be with my baby) and getting paid $11 per hour. I had the expense of purchasing my own computer last summer when I started working from home. I live in a medium sized Midwest town. Should I ask for more money, look for a different work at home job, or just shut up and be happy with what I’ve got? If you think I should look for something else, should I start my own home business or look for online opportunities? Thanks in advance for all your help!
For those who asked: I’ve been at my current job for almost two years with only one raise. I think I’m just irritated right now because the company I work for charges customers $85 per hour for the work that I do. I probably won’t rock the boat right now, but it would be nice to have a little extra cash with a baby around!

Answer: Depends on your situation:

- Are you happy with things as they are?
- Are you financially stable, don’t think you’ll need more $$ in the future.

If you’re feeling ambitious, here’s what I recommend:

You’ve got a good situation. Don’t rock the boat by asking for more money. That’s a turnoff to your employer. Instead, try and augment your current income with freelance work, to launch your own practice. Set your rate much higher, like $28/hour.

Answer want ads to get new work. Even if the ad is for permanent position. They might send you work anyway.

Most graphic designers I know are freelancers. You need to setup your own website. Put out a sample portfolio that shines. Be sure to have a guestbook, and follow-up on all inquiries. Make a reputation for fast turnaround.
